Hair is primarily made up of proteins (up to 90%) called keratin. Keratin is a hard fibrous protein that is composed of polypeptide chains. The meaning of polypeptide originates from the Greek word "poly" meaning many and "peptos" meaning digested or broken down. Basically, if protein is broken down and analyzed, we will find individual amino acids. Many (poly) amino acids joined together will form a "polypeptide chain". Two amino acids are joined together by a "peptide bond", and a specific number of amino acids that are placed in their correct order will form a certain protein (such as keratin, collagen, etc). Research has revealed 21 different amino acids make up the structure of hair.

Over time, hair loses key amino acids due to factors such as weather and UV light exposure. To counteract the drying and damaging effects from the environment and sun exposure, as well as from chemical treatments, look for shampoos and conditioners containing amino acids that can penetrate the hair shaft and restore a more healthy and vibrant texture. The regular use of a conditioning product is essential for moisture retention and maintaining protection for your hair. Normal conditioners should only be applied to the hair shaft, but if you’re using an antidandruff variation, make certain to massage the product to both the scalp and along the length of your hair to get the maximum benefits.
