Restoring a Youthful Appearance

Dr Bryce J Cowan BSc MSc MD PhD FRCS(C)

Facial aging is a natural process in which wrinkling, and fine lines occur in the face over time. There are two general factors in facial aging:

Intrinsic: These are natural changes within the body, such as bone and fat loss, called atrophy.

Extrinsic: These are external factors that accelerate damage to the skin, such as overexposure to sunlight, or smoking.

While the intrinsic factors are natural, and unavoidable in the natural process of aging, the most important form of prevention is in controlling the extrinsic factors that result in accelerated aging of the skin. Proper skin care, reducing exposure to UV rays and living a healthy lifestyle in general are all things that will help maintain healthy skin over time.

There are many available options in facial rejuvenation, a broad term that includes all procedures designed to restore a more youthful appearance in the face. Some examples of available treatments include topical creams and solutions that enhance collagen production and reverse sun damage, resurfacing procedures such as laser treatment or microdermabrasion, the use of injectable fillers such as Botox® (See for details), and various surgical procedures such as brow lifts, nose jobs, and the like.

The biggest criteria in determining what works for you, is the severity of facial aging. Here is a general guideline:

  • Minor wrinkles are managed well by the use of injectable fillers such as Botox®. It is the recommended filler for eliminating wrinkles at this time.
  • For wrinkles over a larger area, or for sun damaged skin, the use of topical skin creams as well as procedures like microdermabrasion, chemical peels and laser resurfacing are effective in rejuvenating your skin.
  • Surgical procedures are often required for more severe cases of skin aging. These procedures can include additive procedures such as implants or reductive procedures such as liposuction, or a combination of the two, and can result in the most immediate and effective results.

Consult your dermatologist for more details on available options, and what is right for you.
